August 2010–More than a decade of vision and hard work has been rewarded in North Brentwood township, Prince George’s County, Maryland. On June 19, 2010, the Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center (PGAAMCC) celebrated the official dedication of the site for their future home. The Museum & Cultural Center has drawn from the pioneering history of African Americans from and in Prince George’s County, using it to develop the launching point for the new facility. PGAAMCC is dedicated to exploring art, culture and history and what they mean for audiences of all ethnicities and cultural contexts in 21 st century America. Prince George’s County, Maryland has long been recognized as one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse counties in the nation – a true microcosm of America. Its new Museum and Cultural Center will serve as a model for 21 st century cultural organizations. Building the PGAAMCC has been the goal of a passionate core group of individuals. They are committed to shining light on the lives of African Americans in order to enhance the current and future cultural environment and experiences of residents of greater Washington, DC and the nation. The concept for the PGAAMCC is the brainchild of its Board Chair Lillian Beverly, the former mayor of North Brentwood, which is the oldest community in America incorporated by African Americans. Mayor Beverly, the Board and staff of the PGAAMCC, and Schultz & Williams have been working together for two years to bring strategic focus to PGAAMCC and lead to the introduction of a $40 million Capital Campaign for the facility’s construction. The target date for completion is 2015. Founded in 1987, Schultz & Williams is a national consulting firm headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today S&W works with nonprofits throughout the United States and continues to exemplify its legacy as one of the first firms in the country to combine the principles of development, management and marketing into our consulting services—an approach that proves successful for nearly every client challenge. |
