November 2008– Schultz & Williams (S&W) Principal M. Jane Williams addresses fundraising in challenging economic times at a presentation sponsored by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. As part of a panel that addressed an audience of 260 executives and management professionals from Philadelphia’s top nonprofit organizations, Jane and four other panelists shared their experiences and understanding of how the world’s current economic situation may impact fundraising and development activities in the months to come.

With more than 40 years of experience in development and institutional advancement, Jane brings a wealth of information and expertise to trends in fundraising during economic downturns. Since 1967 there have been five recession periods during which total giving (in current dollars) continued to grow; however, growth during these periods is noticeably slower than when the economy is not in stress. When adjusted for inflation, giving drops by approximately 1% during recession years compared to a 4.3% increase in non-recession years. Different types of nonprofits experience a different impact—some may grow, others may experience a decline. Each organization faces a unique set of challenges that must be considered in order to minimize the impact of economic slumps on giving.

Most important, during these difficult times all organizations must make their institutional case through frequent communication—convey their need and build their brand through "top of mind" awareness. When decisions are made, organizations must be sure to acknowledge, affirm and inform their donors. Williams recommends meeting personally with major donors to steward gifts, understand their personal situation and acknowledge the importance of the relationship.

Many development officers and nonprofit leaders are turning to Schultz & Williams for guidance during these tough economic times. Some are seeking answers to challenging questions related to how the economy will impact their fundraising efforts and others are using our resources to develop specific plans and take specific steps to ensure the best possible outcome for their institutions.

Founded in 1987, Schultz & Williams is a national consulting firm headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
