Health Care Bill: Passed, Signed, Now What?
April 2010

As the dust settles from the debate, passage, and signing of national health care reform legislation, the question of the hour is what these reforms mean for the non-profit sector?

The short answer is that the newly-passed health care bill will have major implications for nonprofits internally as well as for the communities you serve.

A few noteworthy highlights include:

  • Employer incentives for small nonprofits and for-profits to provide health insurance to employees; and
  • New requirements for nonprofit hospitals to retain their tax-exempt status;

A good snapshot of some of the changes for nonprofits can be found here along with additional resources to learn more about the implementation process which the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have already started.

It’s very important to keep in mind that some of the provisions of the law (including the employer incentives mentioned above) will take effect immediately, and others will be implemented over a period of four years. So make sure your nonprofit gets up to speed and navigates the wave of national health care policy changes effectively and successfully.
